PAGE 4 — Smoke Signals, Monday, September 29, 1975 1975 Homecoming Contestants BETTY MOORE MARSHACOLONNA DIANE MARTIN TERESA PIKE "American Heritage" Chosen As Hontecoming Theme for '75 By MIKE PATTERSON Plans for the 1975 Homecoimng festivities are well underway according to Dean Clajrton Lewis in an interview last Tuesday. The theme selected by the Student Activites Committee for the Homecoming Parade this year is, “American Heritage: 200 Years of Freedom.” Each dormitory and college sponsored campus organization has been asked to prepare a float, staying within the selected Homecoming theme. The International Students float should be an especially attractive entry this year. The college has written to the em- basseys of the twelve countries represented in our student body and asked for a flag from their respective country. These flags win be incorporated into the design of their float. Besides the twelve foreign countries, Chowan’s student body also represents some twenty different states. The college has written to each of these states and asked for a state flag to be displayed in the parade. The bands featured in this year’s homecoming parade will represent one of the largest varieties to participate in the parade in recent years. The lineup includes the Kempsville Band, Murfreesboro High School Band, the Band from Manteo, the Perquimans County Marching Unit, Eastman High School Band of Enfield, and the Hertford Fife and Drum Corps, which should be one of the more unique bands. The National Guard of Ahoskie will provide the color guard. Also featured in the parade will be Mayor BiUy Hill, George Payne and Marty Pilarski. The Chowan Braves also plan to put in an appearance. This year’s parade will also feature a numto of prize show horses. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Minter of Lexington, North Carolina have agreed to display their Paso-Fino horses in the parade. Mr. Steve Massey from the Circle “M” stables in Gasburg, Virginia will display his Appaloosa horses. The area’s Boy Scout Troops will also participate in this year’s parade as in the past. What this all boils down to, is that with a sufficient amount of student participation, this could well be one of the best Homecoming parades to hit the streets of Murfreesboro in quite a while. The parade will begin to form on Jones Drive at 9:30 on October 18 and will begin at 10:00. The review stand for this year’s parade will be placed across the street from the Robert Vaughn VUlage Center. This year’s homecoming football game will pit the Chowan Braves against Hudson Valley at 1:30. Half time entertainment will be furnished by the Princess Anne Senior High School Marching Band. The band’s 145 members, under the direction of Mr. Ronald Collins, has performed many times at Chowan College. “We are particularly pleased Princess Anne will be with us this year for homecoming,” said Dean Lewis. “A conflict in dates for the past two years prevented Princess Anne’s being with us for the past two homecomings,” added Lewis. Homecoming Queen can didates this year will be chosen the same way as in the past with each dormitory and the Day Student Organization each sponsoring a sophomore queen candidate and a freshman princess candidate. Students will vote, selecting the eight girls for the Homecoming Court. The court will be composed of the four sophomores and four freshman with the highest number of votes. The sophomore and the freshman with the highest number of votes will be named the Homecoming Queen and Princess respectively. Parker dorm is sponsoring sophmore Donna Newsome and freshman Marsha Colonna. West’s candidates are Lyn Griggs for queen and Cindi Lindsey for Princess. The Day Student Organization have Melanie Griffin; sophomore and Sheree Meiggs Vann; fresh man in their comers. Donna Faini and Vickie Lavern Martin are Jenkins choice for queen and princess. Belk will put their best foot forward with Paige Heishman and Nancy Jenks as their can didates for queen and princess. East will be represented by Diane Martin and Betty Moore. Mixon has chosen Teresa Pike as their sophomore candidate and JoAnn Johnson as their freshman candidate. Wrapping up the day’s events will be the traditional Homecoming Dance. This will be a semi-formal dance and will take place in Thomas Cafeteria. Entertainment for the dance has not yet been announced.
